The huge TV series addict I am, I have for you a review of 4 shows that came out this year and that, in my opinion, deserve major recognition from everyone, but mostly you, my fellow bloggers.
13 Reasons Why
Genres: Drama. Mystery
Release Date: 31st March
Based on: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
I am going to start with “13 Reasons Why” – a series that so suddenly struck us, with its truthful content, exposing the difficulties of teenage lives and the whole horror that almost everyone has to go through during high school. Personally, after watching a trailer, I expected another typical teenage drama/mystery. However, this TV series had me hooked from the very beginning and surprisingly for myself I ended up binge watching it. Even though, it is safe to say, that this is one of the best and probably the most brutally honest teenage dramas yet, I wouldn’t want the producers to make another season, simply because, the series ended on the perfectly climactic point, and in my opinion doesn’t require any further explanation. The painfully harsh reality presented in the show will definitely make you feel extremely emotional, depressed, and maybe even disturbed, but I assure you that it will make you look at others from a slightly different perspective and maybe even make you a better person. I do not want to include the storyline since there might be some people out there, who still haven’t seen the show, but I want to warn you that the last few episode get a little too graphical, and will be hard to watch without tears welling up.
In addition, I hope that this TV series will help raise awareness to what is going on in high schools nowadays, and save many lives. People, who say that they wasted 13 hours of their lives watching this show, really don’t understand the main issues covered or perhaps cannot relate, because of the age difference. If you are a parent of a teenager and they tell you that they don’t want to go to school because people are being mean to them, please listen to your child before calling them a “drama queen” or telling them that everyone goes through the same thing, because you wouldn’t want to go through, what teenagers go through nowadays.
Big Little Lies
Genres: Dark comedy. Mystery
Release Date: 19th February
Based on: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
I’m really not a mystery/drama kind of person; however, strangely enough I loved this series. First of all the amazing cast of one and only Nicole Kidman, amazing Shailene Woodley and of course Reese Witherspoon, all three actresses brilliantly managed to portray three women with very unique personalities and extremely tough destinies. As soon as I heard about the book that the show is based on, I wanted to read it more than anything, unfortunately I couldn’t find time for that, and ended up watching the whole TV series almost in one sitting. Amazing storyline, suspenseful plot twists, breathtaking performance and stunning locations – all those things were greatly combined by the producers and the directors. HBO keeps surprising its audience with more and more exquisite shows and setting our expectations higher with every new TV series. 7 episode story is guaranteed to have you hooked from the very beginning.
Release Date: 24th April
Based on: #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso
If you are a blogger or a vlogger or just an entrepreneur with big dream and you don’t know about this TV series, then please stop whatever you are doing right now (or straight after reading this) and go watch this show. You can thank me afterwards. Again I will not be including any spoilers in this review, so you are safe to read. What I really enjoyed about the series is that for a change, we can’t call the main character – Sophia, very likable, yes she is a hard worker, yes she has been through a lot of things, yes she struggled and most importantly she is relatable.
However from the very beginning her attitude towards life didn’t live up to the expectations I had, and I’m glad that it didn’t. It’s a comedic show so don’t expect it to always be realistic because it won’t. This series is much deeper than one might think, it doesn’t only motivate you to put yourself together, doesn’t only show you how a girl grew a fashion empire from nothing, but lets you see her grow as a person. Because let’s face it nobody knows what they are doing in their 20’s and it is very inspiring and reassuring to see a quirky girl follow her dream and get where she wanted to be. Honestly, I recommend this show to everyone who is struggling and trying to grow their business or turn their hobby into career.
Release Date: 25th April
Another comedy show that I absolutely loved, unfortunately it is only 10 episodes long, hopefully there will be more seasons coming out. Out of all actors/actresses in the show I believe that Andrea Martin’s approach to her character was the best. Her outstanding performance had me laughing in tears a couple of times. What disappointed me, however, is that the show is way too similar to 30 Rock and maybe even a bit worse. Characters didn’t have any chemistry going on which was a little disappointing as well. On the other hand, it is a very charming light show that will make you laugh.
