“Me Time” ideas for busy moms
“Aaarryo, get kuman tone grossi!”
“Hey, to lizie kifer inn rentré kumsa?!!”
“You look so tired with your dark circles”
Dear busy moms, how many times have you heard those repeating phrases from relatives or friends? For working mums, the struggle is real between career, household chores, and the kids. For stay-at-home mothers, it is between taking care of the children, the husband, and the house.
We always put everyone first and think about ourselves last. Mothers are sometimes so emotionally attached to the welfare of children and family that they eventually forget to take care of themselves; both physically and mentally.
Squeezing some alone time for yourself in your busy schedule is not selfish. Instead, this will make you feel more refreshed with more energy!
Based on my recent articles emphasizing on solo time, I’ve had many requests from mums on how they can have some ‘me time’ for themselves. I hope those 10 tips below will help, even a little bit 😉
Attend Zumba / Yoga classes or subscribe to a gym
As we all know, exercise and yoga have both short-term and long-term health benefits. Why not switch off Channel 4 on your TV, and enroll in a gym?
Finding a gym close to where you live or work is the best option. Most gyms have flexible packages for you to choose from, depending on your needs and schedule. A quick search on Facebook or Google will yield all the information you need to find the right place to start.
Zumba or yoga classes are a great way for you to start reconnecting with that body. Two to three times per week and you’ll be physically fit in no time.
Plan ahead with your husband or relatives so that the kids are taken care of during those one or two hours until you get back home.
Spend time with your close friends
We tend to lose touch with our friends as we grow up. As responsibilities grow, this hardly leaves us with any time to catch up with old-time besties.
If you are are a stay-at-home mum, why not plan some time out with other stay-at-home mums while the children are at school? Grabbing a coffee/pizza or watching a movie once a month is a sure way to keep in touch. Above all, it will help to get out of your routine life.
If you work and can’t go out during weekdays, why not talk with your spouse about having one Saturday off each month so that you can leave the children with him? He’ll probably also enjoy spending quality time with the little ones.
So, meet up with your friends and enjoy a good wine with them!
Take a bubble bath
An easy way to relax is to have steamy bath or a hot shower. Once in a while, when you reach home after a long day at work, why not just allow yourself a full hour of me-time?
Head straight to the bathroom to enjoy that relaxing feeling of water on your skin. What’s even greater is the long-lasting after-effects of a bath or shower.
You can also prepare your own bubble bath based on what your body needs. If you have sore muscles, add a bit of sea salt or Epsom salt. Feeling stressed? Add a calming scent, such as Vanilla or Lavender. And, for dry skin, you can use natural oil.
How to make a bubble bath?
Mix the ingredients below in a clean container under running water:
- 1 cup of oil
- ½ cup of honey
- ½ cup of body soap
- 1 tablespoon of Vanilla
- 1 egg white (optional)
And if your hubby’s not in the mood to help you with a massage, hand him the baby monitor, put on some music and relax in the tub!
Treat yourself your favorite meal
“Mama, mo lé mange mine frire zordi!”
Mums, you always cook your children or the husband’s or the in-laws’ favorite food. Basically, you try to cater to everyone’s taste to the point where you even forgot what your favorite dish is. Once in a while, it does not hurt to prepare or even order your favorite evening meal.
You could even set up specific days for everyone’s favorite at home. Mondays could be for your son’s favorite meal, Wednesdays for your husband and Fridays for yourself. This way, everyone gets special attention to each and every week!
Go Jogging / Brisk walking
A simple jog in the park can do wonders! Mornings on weekdays are always busy with preparing the kids for school and getting everything ready in time. So, you may not really have the time to go jogging in the morning.
But, what’s the excuse for not doing it on weekends? You could enjoy a brisk walk in the park or on the beach. This will help to clear up your mind and you will feel more refreshed.
Start a hobby (Gardening, Photography etc)
Start a hobby to get away from your routine life. Identify those things that you always wanted to do but never took the time to. Make a list. It could be painting, gardening, sewing, baking cakes or even blogging.
There are community centers in every region where you can take courses for free, and learn the things that you want to do.
For instance, if you always wanted to sound like Shakira, why not start online Spanish classes? You can get started with free online sites or apps like Duolingo.
Get monthly massages, manicure or pedicure
Once every month, let the kids spend the day with their grandparents and de-stress yourself with your partner.
Book an appointment to your favorite salon and get a relaxation massage to ease your tiredness. You will easily find numerous deals online for spas and salons. There are even coupons for couples.
Get lost in your books
“There is no friend as loyal as a book.” ― Ernest Hemingway
The only books that you are probably reading right now are “Petit Chaperon Rouge” or Face-book.
When was the last time you really took time to read a book ?
Once the children sleeping, brew some tea and immerse yourself in your books. Book lovers know that those simple sheets of paper have the power to take your mind off everything.
If you have a smartphone, download the Kindle app (for free) and you can read your books whenever you are free but be sure to turn off distractions from other apps.
No excuses, if you really do not have time to download books, you can make use of audio-books which you can listen in the car on your way to work and back home.
Date night with the spouse
Now and then, plan a date night with your spouse. Get a trustworthy babysitter who will take care of the children for the night, so that you do not have to worry if they had dinner or are in bed by 9pm. Even dads need a break sometimes, so book your favorite restaurant and enjoy each other’s company, if possible for a complete night.
Go out shopping alone or bring your friends. Isn’t is great to be able to wander in the stores and try as many outfits as you want, without the sound of your kids yelling and running around, threatening to bring down the whole shop?
